FOCUS ON QUALITY

Whether you’re choosing to build your forever home or sell straight away, there is one thing you need to get right, the quality. The structure of your home is the key to its longevity so the quality of its ‘bones’ is something not to take light-heartedly. An easy way to get a feel for the quality of a builders work is by looking at their display homes. While walking through, don’t be afraid to ask about the structural materials you can’t see and understand what materials they use. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and money by asking these questions and doing a little extra research.

ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS

Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. A good place to start is to ask family and friends for their experience with builders. You can also try looking in your local newspaper, ask local tradesman in your area or have a chat with a real estate agent. Once you’ve got a few builders names down, do some research and look into their portfolio of work. If you’ve got direct contact information for any of the builders, use this to ask them about their recent jobs and if they have any clients you could call for a chat. Otherwise, many building companies will have a website where you can view various house designs, testimonials and contact information.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Good communication is crucial when building a home. To ensure your build runs as smoothly as possible you need to make sure you and your builder are on the same page every step of the process. Before you pick a builder, make sure you take note of their communication style and ask a few questions. Some ideas of questions you might like to ask are; Who will be my direct contact person throughout the build? Are you a licensed builder?, Do you work in the same area I’ll be building? What other projects will you be working on at the same time? A good builder will not only answer all your questions but will encourage you to ask more!
