First impressions matter – so what can you do to ensure you are the envy of all your neighbours.

When it comes to your home, a lot of people pay the most attention to what’s on the inside, especially if they are selling or listing their property for rent. But it’s equally important to think about the outside. After all, it is the first thing people see when they get to your street.

Fixing up your exterior doesn’t have to be a hard or expensive activity. There are a few simple things you can do to your home or rental property that can make you the talk of the town.

Let’s start at the top, the roof. When giving a home exterior a makeover, many of us fail to think about the roof – but it’s a vital part of a healthy and beautiful home. Restoring the roof could be your ticket to a fresh home exterior. This is not a DIY task, you’ll need to hire a professional, but the benefits will definitely outweigh the costs.

You probably heard many people wish for a house with a white picket fence. Generally, if a fence is sitting perfect and pristine it is a tell-tale sign that what’s inside is just as neat. If something new is outside the budget, consider giving your existing fence a fresh coat of paint. It will help liven everything up and create a fresh new feel to your front facade.

While we are on the topic of paint, Ensuring your exterior looks fresh and clean will do a tremendous amount for your street appeal. Even if you don’t want to change your colour scheme, or your house isn’t visibly run down, you’d be surprised by the difference a paint job can make. It is so simple to add a fresh lick of paint, and you can even do it yourself!

With all these upgrades, it is important not to neglect the garden and landscaping. Mow your lawn, sweep and remove any leaf litter or debris, trim and weed your garden, and clean your windows. Basically, ensure everything looks neat and orderly. If you are wanting to level up try adding fresh pavers to a driveway or entry path, sprucing up your verandah or planting some new trees, flowers, shrubs or ground covers, can contribute to a real sense of entry.

After trimming hedges and tending to the lawns, there will be a bit of debris to clean up. Make sure you also check your gutters and fascias for any leaves and branches. Clean the gutters and check downpipes are not clogged to ensure they drain well. If they are looking rusty or grubby, give them a quick coat of paint. If the paint on fascias is peeling, they should be scraped, sanded, cleaned and repainted to improve their appearance.

Now we have tackled the big-ticket items, it’s time to address the finer details. It truly is the small details that pack a punch. Think your post box and house number, if in good repair, can give the impression of a well-cared-for house. If they are in reasonable condition, it’s simply a matter of cleaning, polishing or painting. If you are wanting to take it to the next level create the feeling of the great lifestyle your house offers by adding outdoor furniture accented with bright-colored cushions. Maybe even buy a few large pots and add colourful flowers, you can always take these with you if you decide to move.

Remember you can absolutely make a big impact, whether you are selling our renting. So don’t neglect your curb appeal!
