Since the date of its release, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo has truly taken the world by storm. Thousands of people around the world are now cleansing their homes of any items that do not ”spark joy”. Award-winning author and tidying queen herself, Marie Kondo has captivated viewers with how simple it is to eliminate clutter and excess. Here are a few top tips you can implement to ”Kondify” your home and make a more organised space to live in.

VISUALISE

What do you most want out of the space you are about to tidy? Functionality, productive, warm, inviting, relaxing? Whatever it may be, map it out in your head or even create a vision board.

This will help you decide what items you will want to keep and which ones you are just hoarding for the sake of it. Visualising what kind of outcome you want for the space will also help you with your decorating and styling.

FOLLOW MARIE’S METHOD

Marie has defined a method that breaks your home down into categories to make the mess a little bit more manageable. The KonMari Method order goes as follows: clothing, books, paper documents, sentimental items and finally, miscellaneous items.

The first step of this method is to pull everything out of every cupboard and draw (in the KonMari order) to create an enormous mountain of mess. Go through each item and decipher whether it ‘sparks joy’ or whether you no longer have an emotional attachment to that object. The items you will come across may surprise you!

Over the last decade outlets such as online shopping and mass produced retail items have fueled a consumer culture that is absolutely obscene. Thus meaning, we have a copious amount of ‘stuff’ that we generally do not have a purpose for.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE SPACE

Once you have sorted through everything, it is now time to find it a home. Marie suggests folding and stacking things vertically. Not only is it more pleasing to the eye, but it also makes it easier to find objects and gives you the most space within that space.

Using tidy trays, containers and storage boxes are also a great idea to keep knick-knacks at bay. Use labels or colour coordination to help you when organising smaller miscellaneous items.

ORGANISE EVERYDAY

An organised mind, means an organised home, right? Try keeping a diary and jotting down things you need to stay on top of every day. Each morning when you check your schedule it will remind you of those little jobs you tend to push aside. Being aware of the task is the first step towards completing it!

One other way to stay on top of your organisation each day is to CAYG (clean as you go). Before leaving a room, quickly scan it from top to bottom. If you see anything that is out of place, put it back where it needs to go. It will make everything easier in the long run.

Finally, the last tidying trick for a more organised home is…. MAKE YOUR BED! It may seem like an annoying mundane task, but it truly does make all the difference. It kickstarts your day and sets you off on the right foot. Trust us, you will learn to understand what your mother or father were nagging you about all for all those years.
